However, I can still remember when I would struggle
just to play a chord that almost rang out!
I always loved music and wanted to be a professional musician since I was 9 years old. I knew what I wanted, but didn't quite know how to go about getting it.
For example, it took almost 4 years of constantly begging my parents for a guitar until they finally broke down and bought me a cheap starter guitar/amp set from K-Mart (if anyone remembers that store).
Finally! I had a guitar!
However, it was a pretty rocky start. I found it extremely difficult to get anything to sound good at all. Plus, my fingers would not co-operate whatsoever.
Fortunately for me, I truly LOVED music and I was determined to make this work.
So, I stuck with it and practiced A LOT!
Over time, my fingers gradually become more co-ordinated and I had more strength and control. But it took a while for sure.
10 years and TONS of practice later, I finally started teaching and performing Full-Time for a living. I have accomplished my dream!
Although, after teaching for a short time, I had a weird thought...
Were all my students born with more talent than I was?
A strange thing was happening my first year of teaching. It seemed that all my students where picking up these guitar skills much quicker than I ever did.
I remember thinking to myself, "they are much better than I was at this stage of the game". Then it dawned on me...
I was showing them techniques and exercises tailored especially for their needs. Ones that no-one showed me, but through massive repetition, my mind/body must have figured out.
You see, I would watch myself play whatever it was that I was trying to teach them. I would then compare what I was doing, to what they were doing and focused in on certain aspects. The ones that would make the biggest impact.
I would then find short, repetitive exercises that concentrated on the skill or movement that they needed to develop, and I have to say...
It Was Pretty Amazing!
I would watch their playing transform before my eyes.
Many times they would start off an exercise failing spectacularly, sometimes laughing at themselves because of how little control they had of their fingers. At the same time saying something like... "I'll never be able to do this" or "this will take forever!"
However, with each repetition of these specially designed & extremely focused exercises, they felt themselves gaining more & more control.
And then...I'd ask them to close their eyes and do it. "NO WAY!" was the most common response.
Then... 5-10 minutes later, they were doing just what they said they would never be able to do! And doing it well!
Usually replying "That is SO CRAZY!", or...
"What the hell just happened here?"
One student actually said "What kind of Voodoo IS this?"
And...I asked that same question in my head the first few times.
Although, remembering all the material that I've studied (and applied in my own practices) on how the brain develops new skills, learns new material, decodes, stores and retrieves new information etc. (I find this stuff fascinating btw...), it made perfect sense.
I was just amazed to see how fast this approach worked for all of my students...right in front of my eyes!
Needless to say, it quickly became something that I would implement regularly in all my teaching methods.
